The English Premier League, the most-watched sports league in the world, has dropped its support for Black Lives Matters this Thursday (Sept. 16/2020).
PL footballers will continue their support for anti-racism on the pitch, but the league will no longer be associated with Black Lives Matters. The final straw was the organizations support for defunding the police.
The PL chief executive, Richard Masters, told MP’s “we’re drawing a clear distinction between a moral cause and a political movement”
However, the Premier League will continue to run the No Room for Racism campaign, with the aim of eliminating racism within football stadiums and online.
Pressure will undoubtedly be put on other major sports leagues, where fans may be open to the idea of ending racism in general, opposed to agreeing with a political movement
