Every year a group of secret people, meet at a secret time, and at a secret location to draft dozens of fantasy baseball teams. It is an honor and privilege to be part of TGFBI community, and with the draft now concluded, and draft results being de-classified, I want to go over the S&S team.
Before I dig in, I want to say a big thank you to Justin Mason, the chairman of the TGFBI organization.
The amount of work and dedication that goes into setting up the leagues and approving applicants is a gargantuan task that should not go under-appreciated, we as a baseball community are lucky to have you.
Also, I want to thank him for accepting me in the league again this year, as though we at S&S may be relative small fish, we absolutely love going up against industry heavy weights.
So here is the team, drafting out of the two spot:
Not pictured here is a key injured players, Jose Altuve.
TGFBI settings are 15 team, with two catcher, one MI and CI, five OF, and one UT spot. This leads to quite the big roster size with a full 30 rounds of drafting. Settings are standard Roto 5×5.
This was my first legit baseball pool, as the live draft began February 27th, about a month before opeing day.
Batting average tends to dry up fastest in drafts, so I aimed to lock down three guys who were above average in that regard with J-Ram, Goldschmidt, and Altuve, who also gave me a bit of speed. Though, with Altuve being out for nearly half the season after breaking his thumb, my team takes a massive hit in offensive prowess. Luis Rengifo will need to pick up the slack for me now (if he even starts). Also grabbed Whit Merrifield for middle infield depth, I feel he will play each day with the potential to lead off when Springer eventually misses some time.
Feel my weakest area is outfield and catcher (Bo Naylor got optioned).
I ended up really liking my pitching, with Javier/Kershaw/Gilbert/Rasmussen as my core four that I’m very happy with.
Overall, I think my team will be competitive. I have solid pitchers who display solid skills and play for good ball clubs, and a good mix of hitters with both power and speed. Also managed to grab fellow Canadian Josh Naylor, he’s going for 40/10 this year !
Going up against players who I read and listen to on a daily basis (looking at you Grey Albright and Scott Jenstad) will no doubt be a challenge, but one I am eager to take on. Eventually, I hope to be sitting at a main event table and competing against them with more than just pride on the line.
Enjoy opening day and good luck in your final drafts.
