In the late 1990’s McDonalds developed an ingenious Monopoly game engineered to keep their consumers coming back for more of their offerings. The idea was to secure game pieces from a Monopoly board to win cash and luxury items. All you had to do was head into your local McDonalds and try your luck.
Enter a few unsavory characters with experience in fraud who could infiltrate the “secure” gaming system and low and behold there are suspicious -looking mega winners everywhere! Well, actually mostly in Jacksonville, Florida to be exact.
This 6 part series introduces us to the FBI who worked the case, the McDonalds employees involved and the fraudsters and their oddball families, bringing it all together for a compelling and entertaining account of these true life events.
I enjoyed the melding of real people and real footage with recreated footage of people and events. The story took unexpected turns and the characters had to be seen to be believed. I found myself feeling sorry for some and disdain for others who milked their greed to bring ruin to unsuspecting fellow participants. Two pieces of advice 1) If something seems too easy, it is and 2) think before trusting a guy who has been married 7 times.
Definitely worth a look- before you next head into your local McD’s this weekend.
