KFC launches fully autonomous 5G food trucks in China

In China this week, KFC has launched a food truck campaign that uses autonomous 5G vehicles, allowing customers to purchase its fried chicken at the press of a button.

Here is the vehicle in action outside a metro station in Shanghai.

Customers are able to “place an order on the screen, and it accepts payment via QR-code. After payment is made, the door will open for you to collect your order.”

SoyaCincau, a Malaysian media outlet, states the food trucks are manufactured by Neolix, a self-driving logistics startup based in Beijing.

Neolix’s autonomous delivery vehicles have a range of up to 62 miles on a single battery charge.

KFC is not the only company attempting to revolutionize the food industry via the adaption of automation and artificial intelligence. White Castle, another American fast food company, has recently announced it will begin automating its US kitchens.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many economies forever, and it looks like KFC’s 5G vehicles are part of this trend.
